River type, grade and hazards

Open water on the River Hamble the section can be quite exposed to wind and weather and tide.

Race held at top of tides to reduce effects but tide can race in and out in this area quite fast depending on tidal range on the day also flood water and weather can alter this.

It can be choppy due to weather and boat traffic (although boats are more restricted in this area of the River Hamble).

Suitable for novices unless conditions very windy and as long as they can steer boat and have good stability. The bank is a long way away in some parts of the course if a paddler is blown off course.

Why not visit the Working Farm before your race, it has been featured in TV documentaries re farms/the war etc. and is great for adults and children alike, lovely café there extra charges to go to Farm.

“Many things to see and do, very educational in terms of the Victorian kitchen, schoolroom and activities on offer and of course the delightful animals. Manor Farm is a lovely place to visit!"

Manor Farm has been a working farm for over 600 years.

Meet Mrs Earwicker, the farmer’s wife, and the other costumed characters who bring the Victorian farm to life. See what’s cooking in her farmhouse kitchen – you may even be able to buy seasonal produce – or watch her doing the washing, beating carpets etc.

Explore the historic buildings and barns, enjoy the free range and other animals, watch traditional farm machinery at work, and take a peek into our old privy!

Nearby 13th century St Bartholomew’s church is worth exploring too. All that remains today is its chancel, which overlooks the farm’s pretty duck pond.
