Welcome to Wildwater Canoeing

Wildwater Canoeing is a discipline of canoe racing, also known as Wildwater Racing and Whitewater Racing. The wildwater time trial is the purest of whitewater racing forms - the athlete, the river, the clock.

A racing performance is the result of physical conditioning, skill and harmony with the water - and is the only sport where social paddling is necessary to achieve a peak performance. Beautiful water, scenery and companionship make the Wild Water Racing experience compelling. The competitor is free to take whichever route on the river they desire, a freedom of racing unsurpassed in the whitewater world.

Wildwater Canoeing is governed by British Canoeing

GB Team Selection Event 16th & 17th April, Grandtully - Message from Paul Anderson WWR Head Coach.

GB Team Selection Event 16th & 17th April, Grandtully - Message from Paul Anderson WWR Head Coach.

With GB Selection now 2 weeks away, can I please bring the below information to the attention of Athletes and Coaches.

This information is intended to be helpful/informative for newer atheletes to our sport. I recognise that selection can be a nervous time for paddlers and just want to ensure that you are well prepared.

  • Athletes are required to register for selection ahead of the race. Please note this is a separate process from entering the race. Registration and race entry details are on the WWR web site.

  • Race Registration on Saturday 16th April will open at 09.00 Hours and close at 10.30 Hours. Bib numbers will then be generated and timings will be strictly adhered to. The race briefing is compulsory for those racing.

  • You will require proof of BCU/WCA/SCA Membership in order to compete.

  • There will be boat scrutineering at the event for ALL entrants. Rules are on the WWR web site. Boats must pass in order to compete in the event.

  • Buoyancy Aid  will be checked against markings standard - EN ISO 12402-5

  • Canoe Helmets must be marked - EN 1385

  • Athletes who still require competence assessment must notify Paul Anderson ahead of the event, at 10.30am latest on 16th April. A medium competence is required to qualify for 2016 International competitions. The latest assessments are published on the WWR Web Site.

The timing of the sprint event will be electronic push button coordinated by a designated timing team. Albeit this system provides times to the 100th, our rules state this must be rounded to 0.5 of a second. The use of this is due to the river width range of the beam timing. Should this be resolved and 100% test reliable we will revert to use of this system. The classic race will be timed by stop watch timing.

  • A request for discretionary selection has been received for Hannah Brown. Objections to this must be submitted by mid-night on the day of selection (Sunday 17th April).

Water levels at Grandtully are currently good with rain forecast for the week ahead. I trust your preparations are going well and look forward to seeing you at what is looking to be an excellent top level weekend of racing.

Prudoe Race Cancelled 16th April

Hi All,

I regret to inform you that the event planned for the Northern Region Wild Water race planned for the 16th April at Prudhoe has had to be cancelled as the river and bridge at Ovingham is still unsafe following the floods and there is no access to the river below the bridge.

Also the building we use is out of action and there are no toilets.

 Regards

 Rachel
